A registered nurse salary is among the best. Based on data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), that currently Occupational Outlook Handbook, the average annual salary expected by registered nurses is $68,450. The actual salary will vary greatly based on the specialization of an RN, location, year of experience, and various other factors.

What is the earning potential of Registered Nurse RN?

There are a number of external factors that greatly influence the potential salary of a registered nurse. For example, an RN that has several years of experience, will have a higher potential income or salary than the RN that has just entered this field. Education also plays a role.

BSN is eligible to work as a supervisor or in other high-level roles that contribute to higher salaries than an RN with an associate's degree. Special Registered Nurse (RN) areas, such as acute care or surgery, are factors in how much they are paid. Because certain specialties require more responsibility to translate to a larger salary.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the highest paid industry for registered nurses is in government, general medical, surgical hospitals, and home health care services.

What is the potential demand for RN's career?

Simple answer: Of course. In fact, current nursing shortages in the US have created a high demand for nurses registered in all medical arenas.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states that careers for registered nurses will be needed at home or home care facilities. That is because the hospital is under pressure to remove the patient as soon as possible. The need for RN is increasing, along with the increasing number of home care to address the growing baby boomer population, which then creates jobs for registered nurses.

Registered nurses' jobs will grow 15 percent until 2026, according to BLS data. In particular, RN's work in an outpatient care center that provides same-day procedures, such as chemotherapy, multiple operations, and rehabilitation, is expected to see faster than average growth.

In addition, new registered nurses in this field will be welcomed because older registered nurses want to retire in the coming years.

What about the competition in Registered Nurse jobs?
A registered nurse who is looking for work in a doctor's office and an outpatient care center, may face severe competition. Because these places usually offer regular working hours, weekdays and a more comfortable workplace environment.

Hospitals, which can be high stressed environments, tend to see higher employee turnover rates so employment opportunities can be overwhelming. To make the role more attractive, hospitals sometimes sign bonuses, flexible schedules, and subsidize continuing education classes.

What industries employ registered nurses?
Registered nurses have a variety of choices when it comes to their work location. BLS reports that the following industries are willing to employ the largest number of nurses:
  • Doctor's office - 7 percent
  • Home care and care facilities - 7 percent
  • Government, local and private hospitals - 61 percent
In most fields, continuing education can help push someone into the next career phase. There is no difference with the registered nurse profession. While an associate's degree in nursing is the gateway to entry-level nursing work.

The positions of registered nurses with the lowest salaries are those that provide home care or nursing at home, with salaries below those paid in the mid-1950s.

Large metropolitan areas and university medical centers, top the list with the best nursing salaries in all areas, from the initial salaries for nursing staff to the highest specialized positions.

The metropolitan area centered in San Jose, California, just south of San Francisco, has the highest salary in the country for registered nurses with US $111,000 or more than US $53 per hour, or more than US $2,100 a week.

California is also the state with the most job opportunities for nurses with about 11,000 positions a year, while Wyoming applies for only about 200 new registered nurses a year.

Registered Nurse Salary by experience

Registered Nurse Types with the highest pay

Registered Nurse Types with the highest pay. Registered nurses represent the largest profession in health care according to the 2011 figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The 2.7 million registered nurses active in the health care system range from rookies with technical certificates to veteran experts with a master's or doctorate.

Their salaries vary widely in the same way, depending on experience and requirements.

registered nurse salary type

Anesthetist nurses

Modern surgical procedures rely heavily on the safe administration of anesthesia to keep patients in an unconscious but stable condition while the operation takes place. Nurses have provided anesthesia services since the days of the civil war, and certified nurse anesthetists registered today are among the best paid non-doctors in the field of health care.

A 2009 survey by the American Association of Anesthetist Nurses showed an average salary of US $180,000 per year, being among the top 10 percent earnings of US $250,000 or more. In 2011, a survey by staff firm Locum Tenens reported an average salary of US $168,998 per year for registered nurse anesthetists.

Obstetric nurses

Obstetric nursing is usually associated with the birth of babies, but certified obstetric nurses have a broader scope of practice. They are experienced registered nurses who take advantage of advanced training in obstetrics and gynecology, and are able to provide lifelong care for women.

In rural, impoverished areas and with few medical services where doctors are scarce, obstetric nurses are the main health servants for women. This level of skill and independence is very well rewarded.

A 2011 study by an integrated consulting firm of health care strategies showed an average salary of US $96,418 per year for obstetric nurses. Benefits increased that total average compensation to US $100,480 per year.

Nursing professionals and clinical nursing specialists

Nursing professionals and clinical nurse specialists also provide direct medical care to patients. Nursing professionals are primary care providers, typically practicing in areas such as family medicine or pediatrics.

Clinical nurse specialists have advanced training in specific areas of medicine, such as cardiology or oncology. Both can practice independently although clinical nursing specialists are usually part of a care team with doctors and other professionals.

The 2011 study by the integrated strategy consulting firm found that the average salary was US $92,708 per year for nursing professionals, and with benefits the compensation increases to US $97,552 per year.

Nurse researchers
Although nursing is mostly a practical and clinical profession, not all nurses are involved in direct clinical care. Research nurses are experienced registered nurses who managed to obtain a master's degree and doctorate in nursing.

As part of a team that conducts medical and scientific research, nurse researchers help design studies and research programs. Their practical experience and education gives them an understanding of the scientific principles of the study and its application in the real world.

The industry-sponsored Explore Health Careers website reports salaries of US $95,000 to US $1000,000 per year for research nurses.

Points of reference
A comparison of the salaries of other registered nurses can help put the figures in perspective. In May 2011, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported an average income of $69,110 per year for registered nurses. Their salaries range from US $44,970 per year or less for 10% of lower earnings up to US $96,630 per year or more for 10% of higher earnings.

Nursing researchers and advanced nursing professionals - such as nurse anesthetists, obstetric nurses, nursing professionals and clinical nurse specialists - fall within that top 10 percent. The employment prospects are excellent for these specialized nurses.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 26 percent growth in the field between 2010 and 2020.

Registered Nurse Job Outlook

The job prospects of registered nurses as a whole are good. There is a new gap for new nurses who graduate together with experienced professionals.

The emerging group of new health institutions prefer to employ nurses with baccalaureate degrees, according to a survey by researchers at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).

Furthermore, it is hoped that a new opening will emerge as soon as the old experienced nurses retire. We can see the field of nursing through any aspect, but it is certain that the demand for nurses will always be constant.

BLS also informed that requests for RNs will increase by 15% between 2016 and 2026, and an additional 438,100 registered nurses will be needed throughout the US.
