The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program from CSU Bakersfield Nursing is a nursing program that prepares the next generation of local nurses through exceptional education that combines physical, biological, and social sciences with concentrations in various specialties such as midwifery, pediatrics, and critical care nursing. In addition to in-depth training and classroom teaching, students are exposed to a variety of patient and clinical population settings in the community as part of their curriculum.
Pre-licensed BSN programs for students without prior nursing experience require around 1 year of pre-requisite courses and 3 years of focused nursing courses. After successfully completing general education programs and courses, students will get a BSN degree and will be eligible to apply for an Registered Nurse license exam.
CSU Bakersfield also offers a very popular online RN-to-BSN program for registered nurses who already have Associate degrees in Nursing (ADN) and want to get a Baccalaureate (BSN) degree. This program allows students to complete a baccalaureate degree in 15 months.

Degree Programs
DON (Department of Nursing) has offered a BSN degree since the University first opened its doors in 1970. Over the past 45 years, more than 2,400 students have completed BSN degrees at CSUB. CSUB remains the only state university in the region where students can obtain BSN.Unlicensed students can obtain a BSN and qualify for permission to take the National Council License Exam (NCLEX-RN) through the Traditional BSN Program, a rigorous 3-year experience. Registered nurses can obtain a bachelor's degree through the RN-BSN Program, which features a major online curriculum. As of December 2015, there were 423 pre-nursing students, 155 traditional BSN students, and 82 RN-BSN students registered at CSUB.
As a result of the large demand, the Traditional BSN Program and the RN-BSN Program have both been given the Designation of Impact Status from the CSU Chancellery Office. In CSU systems, programs are given Affected Status when the number of applications received exceeds the program capacity.
At CSUB, acceptance standards and ranking criteria for the Traditional BSN and RN-BSN programs are set by the Bachelor Program Committee (UPC), and the cohort consists of top ranking candidates. Graduates of the BSN and RN-BSN Traditional Programs have provided an excellent set of candidates for entry into the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program at CSUB.
The majority of the RN-BSN programs are delivered in an online format. The RN-BSN program has been offered on campus for years, but in 2009 DON began using the Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS) to provide increased access to higher education for nurses in the region. All nursing didactic courses are offered online and do not require a campus presence. One clinical course of this program, Public Health Practicum, requires 100 hours of clinical experience.
The BSN program received continuous approval from the Registered Nursing Agency (BRN) of California in the fall of 2011. Accreditation of the BSN program by the Collegiate Nursing Education Commission (CCNE) was successfully updated in the spring of 2012. The Continuous Improvement Progress Report (CIPR) is due in December 2017, and evaluation in the next place is planned for Spring 2022.
Graduation Programs
DON (Department of Nursing) opened the MSN program in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in Nurse Administration, and received the National League for Care (NLN) accreditation in 1991. After the adoption of the Family Nurse Practitioner Pathway (FNP) in 1996, the BSN and MSN programs switched successfully to accreditation CCNE in 1998.Additional MSN tracks were also introduced and stopped for many years, based on student requests and available resources. Between 1990 and 2010, the MSN program graduated 114 FNPs and 87 Clinical Nurse Leaders, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Educators, and School Nurses. Most MSN graduates remain in Kern District and are leaders in the local health service community.
During the period of economic recession and state-wide budget cuts in higher education, difficult decisions were made to temporarily close the MSN program. Department of Nursing (DON) suspended the acceptance of new MSN in the fall of 2008 and notified BRN California and CCNE. All MSN students receive advice carefully and get complete information about changes to the program.
There are no new students enrolled, and the final MSN course is offered during Spring 2010. All ongoing MSN students successfully complete their courses and graduate as planned in June 2010. In 2011, CCNE accreditation for the MSN program was voluntarily withdrawn due to the program's moratorium on status. As a result, on-site evaluations that are regularly scheduled by CCNE in 2012 do not include graduate programs; there are no MSN courses offered and there are no students applying.
Between 2010 and 2014, leaders in our community and on campus monitor trends in the health care system, the needs of our community, and the professional goals of our current and prospective students. A feasibility study has been carried out, which indicates an extraordinary need for more FNP; a healthy MSN / FNP program is an important resource for Central Valley of California.
The MSN program with the FNP Track was reopened in the fall of 2014 with full approval by BRN California, and is now trying to rebuild accreditation from CCNE through a new standard program process. The current group of 15 students will complete the program in June 2016, and a new group of 18 students is planned to enter in August 2016.
The university will move from the quarter system to the semester calendar in the fall of 2016. For this reason, no new MSN registration is planned for Fall 2015 to avoid having a full cohort in the middle of their curriculum during the transition period.
