Adult Clinical Nurse Specialist - Gerontology
The Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist covers perspectives on health recovery and health promotion, while developing skills in case management. This area of concentration focuses on physiological and psychosocial theories, concepts, and research that underlie self-care and the growth needs of individuals aged 15 years and over.Other themes that are generally emphasized include: client holism, family relationships, environmental influences, conceptual thinking, and independent nursing actions.
The Faculty assists students in personalizing their education by facilitating work in clinical or non-hospital fields in specialization courses. Practical experience provides opportunities to test new approaches and develop advanced skills.
Graduates are eligible to take the national certification exam offered by the ANC (American Nurses Credentialing Center) to get recognition as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. The curriculum also includes courses required by the Texas Nurses Examination Board (TxBON) to qualify as Advanced Practice Nurses (APN). Additional requirements and experience for APN status are available from TxBON.
AE-MSN course of study
Foundation year: The AE program is designed to meet RN licensing requirements and train students in advanced practice and special nursing roles. The first year of the program is a series of intensive and full-time basic courses.The AE-MSN (Pre-License) program is accelerated, a specially designed postgraduate program. These courses cover the content and experience needed to take the National Board Licensing Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) and are required for postgraduate study in nursing.
All basic courses must be completed before students are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN license exam. The AE-MSN basic course sequence starts at the first summer session of the program, and full-time registration during basic orders is required.
Master's Course: After graduating NCLEX-RN and getting their RN license, students are entitled to work as RN in Texas only.
The second and third years of the program focus on the programs required for the Master of Science degree in Nursing in the area of concentration chosen by students. The MSN level is usually given in the spring of the third year.
What is the Alternate Entry (AE) graduate program?
The Alternative Entry Master of Science in Nursing (AEMSN) program is designed for people who hold a Baccalaureate degree or bachelor in a discipline other than nursing.Will I have a Bachelor of Nursing degree when I graduate?
While AE students complete courses to prepare them for their RN license, they do not get a bachelor's degree. After successfully completing the AE program, students will have a Masters or PhD in Nursing.Where are the Nursing School and Postgraduate Student Affairs Office?

Is there a minimum GPA required to enter?
The University of Texas Graduate School in Austin requires a minimum upper division GPA of 3.0. This requirement is calculated based on the scores obtained in undergraduate and postgraduate high-level programs (junior and senior level).
If you do not have a GPA of 3.0, you may be accepted on condition that all other components of your application are strong. Provisions can be placed by the Dean of the Association of Postgraduate Schools, or by the Graduate Admissions and Progress Committee in the School of Nurses.
